When it comes to shaving, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. Instead, there are 2 methods to choose from: an electric razor (dry) or a manual razor (wet)
So let's consider the pros and cons of each to help you decide which method is best for you
Wet Shaving: The Traditional Route
What is it?
Wet shaving involves a razor (cartridge, safety, or straight razor), shaving cream or soap, and water. It’s the old-school method your granddad swore by.
Pros:
- Closer Shave: Nothing beats the closeness of a blade. Wet shaving cuts the hair at skin level, giving you that super-smooth feel.
- Exfoliation: As the blade scrapes against your skin, it removes dead skin cells, exposing fresh, new, smooth skin
- Satisfying Ritual: For some, it’s a mindful routine. Warm water, a good brush, and a rich lather
Cons:
- Time-Consuming: This isn’t a quick job. If you're in a rush, wet shaving can feel like a chore.
- Prone to cuts and nicks: With experience and a good-quality soap or cream the chances of this reduces, but it never goes away.
- Ongoing cost: Both the cost of the cartridge blades or DE razor blades, and also other costs associated with wet shaving such as your shaving cream.
Electric Razors: The Modern Convenience
What is it?
Electric razors use spinning or oscillating blades behind a protective foil or guard to trim hair.
Pros:
- Speed: Great for busy mornings. There is no preparation needed, you do not need any extra items such as shaving cream, soap or even water. You grab your razor and start to shave.
- Ease of Use: Very little technique is needed. Most models are skin-friendly and reduce the chance of cuts.
- Less Mess: No need for cream, soap, or water
- Control beard length. You don’t have to be completely clean shaven
Cons:
- Not as Close: This means you will not get that super-smooth finish. Also, you may have to shave more often.
- Initial Cost: Good electric razors aren’t cheap, and replacement heads add up.
- Battery/Power Dependency: You’ll need to keep it charged or plugged in. Not ideal if it dies mid-shave.
Summary
If you’re all about precision, enjoy the ritual, or have coarse hair, wet shaving might be your best bet. If you want something fast, convenient, and less prone to skin irritation, an electric razor could be for you
Some people even use both—electric for the workweek, wet shaving on weekends. Why not have the best of both worlds?
